About Us
The Sunset-Ridge Waterfront Alliance (SRWA) is dedicated to building public support for educational resources on water-borne action and initiatives. Through community planning, public outreach, and sustainable partnerships, SRWA is committed to enriching the lives of citizens throughout the New York Harbor.
SRWA was formed in January of 2008 out of the overwhelming community support for ferry reinstatement at the 69th St. Veteran’s Memorial Pier. Heather McCown began canvassing the community in July 2007 to obtain signatures in support of the ferry reinstatement. In October 2007, Heather sent nearly 1,500 signatures to Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Christine Quinn to urge the reinstatement of ferry service as a viable transportation alternative in line with PlaNYC 2030. After speaking at local community board meetings, community councils, local community organizations, and congestion pricing hearings, she was able to organize local activists to join her in forming the Sunset-Ridge Waterfront Alliance. SRWA is in the process of filing paperwork for 501(c)(3) status, and is a member of the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance coalition of partners.
SRWA is continually looking for ways to develop new programs that address the needs of the community. Besides the ongoing ferry initiative, SRWA has started the First Annual Greening the Ridge Festival which was held in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on June 22nd, 2008. This festival provided education on environmentally conscious alternatives for the community, in a fun and interactive atmosphere. This festival was held on the 69th St. Veteran’s Memorial Pier to support our belief in bringing our community to the waterfront! SRWA donated 10, 30-gallon drums to the Parks Dept. for recycling efforts. Through collaboration with Gallery 364, the drums were painted by students on the pier during the festival.
The Second Annual Greening the Ridge Festival is in the planning stages, with the date to be announced shortly- stay tuned!
Through these, and other initiatives, SRWA maintains our mission to revitalize our waterfront areas in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and beyond.
