Community

SRWA is an organization by and for the Brooklyn waterfront communities.

The need for ferry service to be restored was recognized, and the community responded. SRWA co-founder and Executive Director Heather McCown started circulating a petition to restore ferry service to the Bay Ridge 69th Street Pier Ferry Terminal in July of 2007. Within months the petition had been signed by over 1,400 residents of Bay Ridge and Sunset Park.

The community’s support led Ms. McCown to speak at the Community Board 10 meeting on September 17, 2007, and soon enough, the SRWA was formed. The initial response to the revitalized ferry initiative was inspiring, so much so that the story became recognized in print and digital media, from the local blogs to established newspapers.

SRWA will continue the drive to restore ferry service to serve people in Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and other Brooklyn Waterfront neighborhoods with fast, safe, and inexpensive mass transit to Manhattan. SRWA will also develop programs, initiatives, and events to help re-invigorate the waterfront and foster a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable community.
